Jelena Noura Hadid was born on April 23, 1995, in Los Angeles, and raised in nearby Santa Barbara, where she developed a passion for equestrian riding. Her mother, the former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Yolanda Hadid, was a well-known Dutch model, thus modeling was in her blood. (Her father, Mohamed Hadid, is a Palestinian-American real estate developer.) Her modeling career began when she was "like, two years old," when she was discovered by Paul Marciano, co-founder of Guess and a family acquaintance.

Hadid took a sabbatical from modeling to pursue competitive horseback riding and club volleyball after striking postures for Baby Guess, Guess Kids, and eventually Guess. She became captain of the varsity volleyball team at Malibu High School (where she graduated in 2013) and even went to Junior Olympic volleyball qualifiers because she wanted to "have a regular childhood and go to high school."
